A Russian drone struck a covered market in Nikopol, eastern Ukraine, at 9:50 am on April 4, killing five civilians (three women, two men) and wounding 19, including a 14-year-old girl in critical condition, according to the local prosecutor’s office and regional governor Oleksandr Ganja. This attack is part of intensified daytime strikes; overnight, Russia launched 286 drones, with Ukraine intercepting 260. Separate strikes in Kharkiv injured five, while Sumy region saw 11 wounded. In Russia’s Rostov region, a counterattack left one dead and four seriously wounded, and a foreign cargo ship on the Sea of Azov caught fire from drone debris.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Istanbul for security talks with Turkey’s Erdogan, signaling readiness for an Easter truce but noting the Kremlin lacks “clearly formulated” proposals. He invited a US delegation to Kyiv to restart negotiations, suggesting shuttle diplomacy. Zelensky also highlighted Ukraine’s drone defense expertise, recently formalized in defense agreements with Qatar and Saudi Arabia, and suggested Kyiv could help unblock the Strait of Hormuz—a vital oil artery—citing its success in reopening the Black Sea.

For Nigeria, the war’s escalation threatens global food and energy markets, potentially inflating domestic prices. The Strait of Hormuz reference underscores Nigeria’s vulnerability to Middle East disruptions as an oil exporter. Additionally, Ukraine’s drone warfare lessons offer insights for Nigeria’s own security challenges. Given Ukraine's drone defense experience and the Strait of Hormuz reference, how should Nigeria balance its energy export dependencies with regional security cooperation?
