Russian FIDE official dies post-Nigeria trip; malaria suspected but cause unconfirmed
Sergei Indeikin, 36, FIDE operational manager and delegate, died August 23 after developing severe illness following a work trip to Nigeria for the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships (August 1-8 in Abuja). Russian media RBC and Argumenty i Fakty report he contracted severe malaria from a mosquito bite during the trip, citing his mother and colleagues, with his condition rapidly deteriorating after returning to Perm, Russia.
However, FIDE has officially attributed his death only to a "sudden illness" without confirming malaria as the cause, stating they lack independent verification. Indeikin's family and Russian outlets maintain the Nigeria trip connection, while medical expert Professor Alexander Lukashev noted malaria transmission via mosquito bites is possible in Nigeria and other tropical regions. He had organized major FIDE events since 2021 and is survived by his wife and daughter.
For Nigerians, this underscores malaria's persistent risk in endemic areas.
