Samsung phones from 2022+ won't get Android 17 update

Android 17 is almost here (stable release expected June 2026), but many popular Samsung phones won't make the cut. If you own a Galaxy phone from 2022 or earlier—especially the S22 series, A33/A53/A73, Z Fold 4/Z Flip 4, or M-series phones popular across Africa—your phone won't receive the Android 17 update. Samsung's update policy has different tiers: flagships get 7 years, mid-range 6 years, legacy devices 4 years, and budget 2 years. Your phone has reached its OS upgrade limit.

One UI 8.5 will be the last major update for these devices. It's rolling out globally starting May 26, 2026, bringing useful features like iPhone-style file sharing and photo editing improvements. After One UI 8.5, your phone moves to quarterly security patches (most through 2027), then eventually stops receiving updates entirely, leaving your device increasingly vulnerable.

If you're buying a Samsung phone in Nigeria this year, prioritize devices from late 2024 onward like the A16 5G, A26 5G, A36 5G, or A56 5G. These carry Samsung's new six-year update promise—far better value than older models. The A16 5G, in particular, offers six OS upgrades until October 2030. If you're keeping an older phone, install One UI 8.5 when it arrives to extend its useful life.
