Security expert proposes appointing Nigeria's IGP from outside police ranks
Charles Omole, a lawyer and security expert, proposed at The Platform event earlier today that Nigeria should appoint the Inspector General of Police from outside the police force rather than promoting from within ranks. Speaking on June 12, he argued that positions above Commissioner rank are political rather than professional, so the IGP role doesn't require police rank-and-file background.
Omole stated this reform is needed as state police becomes operational and part of widening the pool for Nigeria's top police position. He emphasized that police should be a priority institution for internal security since every nation has a police force, unlike military forces which some nations like Costa Rica, Iceland, Panama, and Mauritius lack.
The proposal challenges Nigeria's traditional approach of promoting the most senior police officer to IGP. Omole suggested looking at international models where police chiefs may come from outside the force, arguing this could professionalize leadership and reduce politicization of the role. He presented this as part of broader policing system reforms needed in the country.
