Senate approves N50,000 fine for hawking, preaching in commercial vehicles
Senate passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (Amendment) Bill, 2026 on Thursday, proposing a N50,000 fine for anyone caught hawking, trading or preaching inside commercial vehicles. The bill also proposes a N50,000 fine, six months' imprisonment or both for motorists who refuse to cooperate with FRSC officers conducting roadside breath tests on reasonable suspicion. Other penalties increase sharply: driving under the influence now attracts a N100,000 fine, up to two years' imprisonment or both; ignoring traffic lights, road signs or pavement markings draws a N100,000 fine; speeding and reckless driving each carry a N100,000 fine, up to two years' imprisonment or both. The amended schedule lists 52 traffic offences with their new penalties and awaits presidential assent to become law nationwide.
Lawmakers say the tougher sanctions aim to curb distractions in commercial vehicles, improve road safety and strengthen FRSC's enforcement powers across Nigeria.
