Senate warns governors misusing state police will face federal sanctions

Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs Chairman Yemi Adaramodu warned on Wednesday that any state governor who misuses the newly created state police will face federal sanctions. Speaking in an interview on Arise Television after the Senate passed the contentious State Police Bill, Adaramodu said governors found using state police to pursue partisan, religious, or sectional agendas will trigger federal intervention, allowing the federal police to take over the roles and functions of the state police force. He emphasized that the law includes safeguards to prevent state police from being used for personal or political interests. Adaramodu also noted that funding for state police will come from both federal and state governments, with the federal government providing additional resources to ensure the forces are well‑equipped for their growing security responsibilities. The State Police Bill, passed by the Senate on Wednesday, aims to establish state‑level police commands while introducing federal oversight to curb abuse. This development affects all 36 states, as governors must now ensure their police units operate strictly within constitutional mandates or risk losing control to federal authorities.
