A Shari'a Court Judge, Bashir Hassan Bashir, has advised Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to avoid scheduling elections during Ramadan, citing physical and spiritual challenges for fasting Muslims. The judge argued that election days often involve long queues under hot sun, causing fatigue for those fasting, and Ramadan's increased devotion may reduce public engagement. He suggested elections before or after Ramadan could boost turnout and fairness. However, he acknowledged Muslims could vote by planning early, staying hydrated, and combining worship with civic duty. INEC's 2027 election dates (Feb 20 Pres/Nat Assembly, March 6 Gov/State) face complaints, but the Senate amended the Electoral Act to allow timetable adjustments. The judge emphasized voting remains a civic right despite Ramadan conflicts.
