South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy released a draft policy to raise strategic petroleum reserves to about 36 million barrels, enough for 60 days of national demand, with two‑thirds as crude oil and the rest as refined products. The plan also obliges licensed fuel makers and wholesalers to keep an extra 14 days of refined stocks such as diesel, petrol and jet fuel, aiming to shield the economy from global supply shocks like the recent Iran conflict that disrupted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

For Nigerians, this move highlights a regional push for energy security while the Dangote refinery in Lagos is already cutting the country’s reliance on imported petrol, having exported over 456,000 tonnes of gasoline to West African markets since March 2026. The dual push—state reserves in South Africa and private refining capacity in Nigeria—could steady regional fuel prices and reduce vulnerability to overseas disruptions.

What should you know or do? Watch for any shifts in local fuel pricing, consider sourcing petrol or diesel from local refineries like Dangote for possible price stability, and factor potential regional stockpiling into your business fuel budgeting.
