South-east Nigerian leaders intensified their campaign for Anim State creation during a meeting with Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu in Abuja. The proposal, sponsored by Imo West Senatorial District Senator Osita Izunaso, seeks to carve the new state from parts of Imo and Anambra states with Orlu as capital. The bill is under legislative consideration as part of Nigeria's constitutional amendment process. State creation requires approval from two-thirds of both National Assembly chambers and two-thirds of state Houses of Assembly, a process that has stalled new states since 1999. Proponents argue Anim State would address developmental gaps and improve political representation. The Imo State Government has already built a Government House in Orlu anticipating the state's creation. Stakeholders emphasize the need for national consensus and governor endorsements, with Kalu urging broader consultations beyond the South-east. The proposal remains pending legislative scrutiny.
