Spain airlines seek 4.9% annual airport charge cut
Spanish airlines and IATA propose 4.9% annual airport charge reduction over 2027-2031, targeting Spain's AENA which collected €1.3 billion in excess regulated returns (2017-2025). Airlines claim this will ease passenger costs while maintaining €10 billion infrastructure investment plan. Between 2017-2025, passenger traffic exceeded forecasts by 15.3%, costing airlines and consumers €400 million in 2024 alone. IATA VP calls Spain's proposed 3.8% charge increase 'absurd'. Nigeria's airport charges rank third-highest in Africa ($180/seat), with FAAN recently reducing cargo fees at MMIA.
