Stanley Nwabali marked his return to competitive football in emphatic fashion, earning the Man of the Match award as Chippa United held Golden Arrows to a goalless draw in the opening fixture of the 2026/27 South African Premier Soccer League season on Saturday, August 1, 2026. Making his first competitive appearance in eight months, the 30-year-old delivered a commanding performance at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium in Durban, earning a 9.1 rating from FotMob - the highest on the pitch after making six crucial saves to secure a clean sheet.
Nwabali had only rejoined Chippa United the previous month after leaving following Nigeria's AFCON 2025 campaign in Morocco, with both parties agreeing to terminate his contract by mutual consent. He had spoken openly about battling mental health challenges after the loss of both parents. Despite Chippa United spending long periods without the ball as Golden Arrows dominated possession and created the better chances, Nwabali remained unbeatable. His standout moment came just before the hour mark when he produced a stunning double save to deny Ronaldo Van Neel.
Beyond shot-stopping, he organised the defence with three high claims, three clearances and 12 ball recoveries, although his passing accuracy of 65% shows room for improvement. His earlier heroics at the 2023 AFCON helped Nigeria reach the final and displace Francis Uzoho as the Super Eagles' first-choice goalkeeper. The draw gives Chippa United, who finished just three points above the relegation zone last season, a solid start to the new campaign. Their next league fixture is at home to Richards Bay on August 11. Nwabali's performance could remind Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle that he remains a contender for the number one jersey ahead of Nigeria's upcoming international assignments.
