Super Eagles crush Mozambique 4-0, face DR Congo or Algeria in AFCON quarter-finals Tuesday
Nigeria's Super Eagles demolished Mozambique 4-0 on Monday to book their place in the AFCON quarter-finals. Victor Osimhen scored twice, with Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams adding one goal each at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The victory extends Nigeria's unbeaten run under coach Eric Chelle, with 12 goals scored and only four conceded so far in the tournament.
Former Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye has warned against complacency despite the dominant win. Speaking on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, Ibitoye said, "You can only face the team that is ahead of you. Some people believe that when you win a tournament, it doesn't mean you are the best. You are just lucky to beat all the teams placed ahead of you." He emphasized that the next game is always the most important, urging the team to stay focused rather than think too far ahead.
Nigeria's quarter-final opponent—either DR Congo or Algeria—will be determined in Tuesday's matchup. Both teams carry history against the Super Eagles. Algeria defeated Nigeria in the 2019 AFCON semi-final, while DR Congo beat Nigeria in the final of the 2026 World Cup African play-off. Nigeria's last AFCON appearance ended in final defeat to Côte d'Ivoire; the three-time champions are expected to go further this time.
Ibitoye believes whichever team advances will be a "worthy opponent" deserving full attention. The quarter-final match is scheduled for Tuesday.
