Super Falcons' Okoronkwo defies racist abuse after Casablanca hotel theft
Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo revealed that several teammates, including goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, had cash stolen from their hotel rooms at the Marriott in Casablanca while the team prepared for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. After sharing the theft allegation, Okoronkwo faced a wave of racist abuse on Instagram, with monkey emojis and abusive messages targeting her. In response, she posted a defiant message on her Instagram Story, quoting "Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that." and urged the team to move forward with pride, unity and determination ahead of the tournament.
A suspect has since been arrested and has confessed to the theft, with reports indicating full restitution is expected. Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu said the team remains focused on their goal of winning a record‑extending eleventh WAFCON title, opening their Group C campaign against debutant Malawi on Tuesday, July 29, 2026.
