A Nigerian university lecturer has called on the National Assembly to amend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Act to allow private universities access to funding. Dr. Sikiru Nurudeen, Associate Professor of Political Science at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, argues the current law unfairly excludes private institutions, limiting their ability to build infrastructure, support research, and develop academic programmes. He states private universities train a significant portion of Nigeria's future workforce and should benefit from TETFund's resources. Nurudeen urges lawmakers to revise the law so both public and private universities can access research grants, infrastructure development, and staff capacity building. He believes inclusion would bridge infrastructure gaps, improve research output, and raise academic standards nationwide.
