Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Executive Secretary Sonny Echono urged Nigeria to invest in medical education and healthcare infrastructure to reduce reliance on treatment abroad. Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Echono said the federal government directed agencies to prioritize investments in medical training facilities and public hospitals. Nigeria loses about $2 billion annually to medical tourism, though spending dropped to $2.41 million in 2024. TETFund will extend support to teaching hospitals and aviation medicine, including the Nigerian Air Force School of Medical Sciences. The agency has already spent N30 billion on tertiary security and will present proposals to strengthen medical infrastructure.
