Three masked robbers, one certainly armed, entered the French Credit Agricole bank branch in Naples at around 11:30 am local time on Thursday, April 16, 2026, and took 25 customers and employees hostage. After about two hours, all hostages were freed shortly after 1:30 pm without serious injuries, according to Naples Prefect Michele di Bari. The robbers escaped through a tunnel that led into the sewers, having taken the contents of dozens of safe deposit boxes; police could not determine the value because only the box owners know what was inside. Some 40 officers, including sniffer dog units, searched the area while forensic teams dusted for fingerprints. The incident highlights security vulnerabilities in banks and the use of unconventional escape methods, raising concerns for residents and businesses in the area. If you are near the bank or have a safe deposit box there, monitor official updates from police and the bank, follow any safety instructions, and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
