President Bola Tinubu today demanded Africa receive permanent UN Security Council seats with veto power, speaking through VP Kashim Shettima at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York. He stated the 1945 structure no longer fits 2026 realities.

Tinubu specified at least two permanent seats for Africa with full rights, including veto power, and five non-permanent seats, per Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration. He emphasized Africa shapes UN agendas without permanent voice.

Highlighting Nigeria's peacekeeping roles in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Darfur, Mali and Gambia through ECOWAS and AU partnerships, he argued global instability affects all nations. Peace requires returning to UN Charter principles of dialogue and international law over coercion.

With Nigeria pushing for Africa to hold veto power in UN decisions on global peace and security, how do you believe this would change responses to conflicts impacting Nigerians at home and abroad?
