Tinubu establishes NHTDAO with Adigwe as coordinator to drive Nigeria's digital health transformation
President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of the National Health Technology and Data Analytics Office (NHTDAO), appointing Dr. Obi Adigwe as its pioneer National Coordinator to accelerate Nigeria's digital health transformation. The office, announced in a statement this week by Presidential Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, will operate under the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare as Nigeria's central platform for coordinating digital health initiatives, improving health data management, and supporting technology-driven reforms across the healthcare ecosystem.
Adigwe brings significant experience, having previously coordinated a ¥300 million nanotechnology grant, led the AFREXIMBank-backed project for Africa's first Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient Training Facility, developed a roadmap securing an €18 million EU grant (the continent's largest for this thematic area), and led the world's first scientific analysis debunking claims about Madagascar's Covid Organics herbal preparation during the pandemic. Rather than replacing existing agencies, the NHTDAO will strengthen collaboration by establishing common standards and improving interoperability.
A Steering Committee co-chaired by Coordinating Minister Muhammad Ali Pate and NESG Chairman Olaniyi Yusuf will provide strategic direction, including representatives from NPHCDA, NHIA, NITDA, state health commissioners from each geopolitical zone, and industry stakeholders. This initiative aligns with broader healthcare reforms leveraging digital innovation to improve health outcomes, strengthen planning, and enhance healthcare delivery efficiency.
