President Bola Tinubu has granted full autonomy to the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education (NMEC) to accelerate digital literacy for 50 million young adults. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced this after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, where comprehensive insurance coverage for 180 federal unity schools nationwide was also approved. The council maintained the seven-year suspension of new tertiary institution establishment, citing that the sector's challenge is no longer about access. Alausa noted that only 228,000 of 2.3 million UTME candidates secured public university admission last year. NMEC's chairperson, Professor Musa Maitafsir, presented an expansive agenda to eradicate illiteracy, currently affecting 56 million Nigerians, through radio, television, and community learning centers. The commission will intensify outreach in rural areas to achieve the three-year digital literacy goal.
