President Bola Tinubu has ordered the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to enroll every Nigerian into its database by December 31, 2026. NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote announced the directive on Channels TV's Sunday Politics programme, stating the President gave them "till the end of this year" to capture all citizens.

Currently, NIMC's database holds 137,371,080 Nigerians. To meet the deadline, the commission is partnering with organisations under the World Bank's Identification for Development (ID4D) project. The directive means all Nigerians must obtain a National Identification Number (NIN) if they lack one, as NIN is increasingly required for banking, SIM registration, and government services.

With approximately six months left in 2026, Nigerians without NIN should visit designated NIMC enrollment centers or partner locations. The ID4D partnership aims to expand access, especially in rural areas. Will you check your NIN status now or wait until the deadline approaches?
