Tinubu Mourns Jackson: Civil Rights Icon Promoted Democracy in Nigeria
President Tinubu joins global leaders in mourning Reverend Jesse Jackson, describing him as a moral voice who advanced democracy and civil liberties in Nigeria and across Africa. Jackson, 84, died Tuesday morning according to his family. Tinubu praised Jackson's lifelong commitment to justice and equality, noting his role in linking African leaders with the Congressional Black Caucus to promote Africa's interests in Washington. As a student in Chicago in the 1970s, Tinubu witnessed Jackson's activism firsthand. Jackson, who marched with Martin Luther King Jr., ran for U.S. president twice and later founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. His legacy includes advocating for Nelson Mandela's release and supporting sanctions against apartheid South Africa.
