Trump Allows Russian Oil to Cuba Despite Blockade

U.S. President Donald Trump said he has no problem with Russia sending oil to Cuba, despite his administration's de facto fuel blockade, as a Russian tanker carrying 730,000 barrels of crude nears the Cuban port of Matanzas expected by Tuesday. This would be Cuba's first oil shipment since January, offering temporary relief to the 9.6 million islanders enduring severe fuel shortages, regular blackouts, and protests amid a deepening economic crisis.

Trump, however, reiterated that Cuba's communist regime will fail "within a short period of time," claiming the oil won't change that outcome. The shipment, moving under U.S. sanctions, was allowed by the U.S. Coast Guard, according to The New York Times. Experts note the crude could yield about 250,000 barrels of diesel—roughly 12.5 days of national demand—forcing Cuba's government to choose between power generation and transport.

For Nigerians, this highlights the vulnerability of nations dependent on foreign fuel supplies. Despite being Africa's largest oil producer, Nigeria imports most of its refined petroleum due to inadequate local refining capacity. The Dangote Refinery represents a step toward energy independence, but full reliance on domestic production remains years away.

If external political pressure disrupted Nigeria's fuel imports—as nearly happened to Cuba after the U.S. captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro—could we face similar blackouts and economic turmoil? Should accelerating local refining be a national priority to secure our energy future?
