US President Donald Trump claims Iran contacted him Monday expressing interest in negotiating a peace deal regarding nuclear matters. The American leader emphasized he will not accept any arrangement allowing Tehran to possess nuclear weapons, stating "Iran will not possess a nuclear weapon" during an unplanned White House press conference.

Trump revealed discussions have reached a stalemate on nuclear issues and confirmed a US "blockade" of vessels in the Strait of Hormuz has commenced. He claimed 34 ships transited the strait on Sunday, the highest since tensions began, and asserted "many tankers are entering empty and leaving full; we have significant capacity to manage that." Trump also warned "Any ship coming close to US blockade will be blown up."

This geopolitical escalation matters to Nigeria as a major oil producer and regional power. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies, with Nigeria's economy heavily dependent on oil exports. Escalating tensions could impact global oil prices, Nigeria's foreign exchange earnings, and diplomatic relations with both the US and Iran. Nigeria may need to carefully position itself diplomatically while monitoring oil market developments closely.
