Trump, Macron to meet in New York Monday to discuss Ukraine at UNGA
US President Donald Trump will meet French President Emmanuel Macron in New York on Monday at 5:35 pm EST (2135 GMT) on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, with Ukraine high on their agenda. According to Trump’s schedule, the meeting is set for that time, and a French official told AFP it is “always a good opportunity to set the tone before the start of this high-level week of the General Assembly, and to have a discussion with the president of the United States with total candor, as (Macron) always does,” adding that it will be a chance to “guide President Trump toward the right decisions, particularly regarding Ukraine, to maintain the effort to support Ukraine and to step up the pressure on Russia.” Macron will travel to New York from Saint Pierre and Miquelon, where he met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and also plans to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the assembly.
For Nigerians, the talks matter because outcomes can influence international stances on the Ukraine conflict, which affects global grain and energy markets, diplomatic support for sovereignty, and the broader UN agenda that Nigeria participates in. The meeting may shape resolutions or statements on peacekeeping, sanctions, and humanitarian aid that have ripple effects on African economies.
Will you watch how the Trump-Macron dialogue influences UNGA debates on Ukraine, and consider what stance Nigeria might take in response to any major shifts in Western policy?
