Trump has nominated new US ambassadors to five African nations, excluding Nigeria, as part of efforts to fill diplomatic positions globally. The nominees include Stanley Brown for Equatorial Guinea, Nick Oberheiden for Egypt, Henry Wooster for Kenya, Laurence Socha for The Gambia, and Daniel Travis for Sierra Leone. All require Senate confirmation before deployment.

Nigeria remains without a permanent ambassador following the departure of Richard Merrill Mills Jr., who served until January 16, 2026. Keith Heffern currently serves as Chargé d'Affaires at the US Embassy in Abuja. The nominations come amid 109 vacant ambassadorial positions out of 195 total worldwide.

The nominations represent the Trump administration's diplomatic reshuffle following the recall of Biden-appointed diplomats worldwide. With the majority of vacancies being country-specific positions, these confirmations will impact Washington's diplomatic engagement across Africa, particularly in the five nations receiving new ambassadors.

Will Nigeria receive a new ambassador soon, or will the current interim arrangement continue as diplomatic priorities shift under the Trump administration?
