US President Donald Trump postponed a planned major assault on Iran at the urging of Gulf Arab allies, according to his Truth Social posts. Trump had prepared a new attack for Tuesday after Iran refused his outlines of a deal, but leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE asked him to hold off as serious negotiations were taking place. The decision came as Trump sought to exit a war that has become a political liability while indefinitely extending a nearly six-week ceasefire. Trump instructed the US military to remain "prepared to go forward with a full, large scale assault of Iran, on a moment's notice, in the event that an acceptable Deal is not reached." Iran has consistently rebuffed Trump's offers and demands the release of frozen assets abroad, lifting of sanctions, and reparations for the war. The cleric-run state, whose supreme leader was killed in initial strikes on February 28, has exerted control over the Strait of Hormuz, sending global oil prices spiraling. Iran has established a new body to manage the strategic waterway, which handles a significant portion of global oil shipments. The negotiations involve complex demands, with Iran insisting on maintaining sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz while the US has reportedly presented demands including limiting Iran to one nuclear site and transferring enriched uranium stockpiles. The situation remains volatile as both sides prepare for potential escalation if talks fail. With global oil prices already affected by the conflict, what alternative energy strategies should countries dependent on Gulf oil be implementing given the continuing instability in the region?
