Earlier today, US President Donald Trump hailed England striker Harry Kane as a 'great player' on Truth Social following the Three Lions' 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16. Kane's second-half penalty took his tournament tally to six goals, leaving him just one behind Golden Boot leaders Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

The Bayern Munich forward has now scored the most goals by a European player in major international tournaments (World Cup and Euro) since his England debut. In the 2025-26 season, Kane has been involved in 81 goals across 63 appearances for club and country—73 goals and eight assists. He is also closing in on Gary Lineker's England World Cup record, having tied the former Everton and Barcelona star for most goals in World Cup knockout rounds for England (six).

England's win marked the first time any team has beaten Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in a World Cup match; prior to this, El Tri had gone unbeaten in 10 games at that venue. Notably, the Three Lions managed only 34% possession, their lowest in a match since 1966.

What does Kane's sustained scoring form say about the evolving demands on modern strikers, and how might African players aiming for similar records adapt their training and mindset?
