US President Donald Trump has increased the proposed 10% global tariff on imports to 15%, bypassing a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated his previous tariff mechanism. The move, announced via Truth Social, uses a previously unused trade provision allowing tariffs for up to 150 days without congressional approval. Trump criticized the court's 6-3 decision blocking his emergency powers under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which had generated $130 billion in revenue. The new 15% tariff will apply to all goods entering the US starting February 24, 2026, affecting Nigeria's exports which currently face a 14% tariff compared to the 27% claimed by the US. This escalation highlights potential economic volatility as Trump seeks to preserve his trade agenda despite legal setbacks.
