Uber has agreed to acquire German food delivery group Delivery Hero for 12.7 billion euros ($14.6 billion), offering 41.50 euros per share. Delivery Hero’s shares fell 0.5% in Frankfurt after the announcement, trading at 37.9 euros. The deal includes Uber taking over Delivery Hero’s businesses in 50 markets across Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Separately, US investment firm SSW Partners will acquire Delivery Hero’s operations in another 14 markets where the two companies compete, for about 1.4 billion euros. Delivery Hero’s management recommends shareholders accept the offer, with completion expected in the second half of 2027. Founded in 2011, Delivery Hero operates in over 60 markets and has expanded beyond food delivery into ‘quick commerce’, delivering small packages. While the announcement does not specify Nigerian markets, the consolidation of two major global delivery platforms could influence pricing, service options and competition in the broader food delivery sector, potentially affecting local operators and consumers in regions where these companies operate. If you use food delivery apps, watch for possible changes in service coverage, fees or promotions as the deal progresses toward completion in 2027.
