The UEFA Champions League quarter-final stage starts this week with eight European elite clubs competing for semi-final qualification. First-leg matches are set for Tuesday, April 8, and Wednesday, April 9, 2026, with return legs next week.

Tuesday's fixtures: Real Madrid hosts Bayern Munich at Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City in the Round of 16, while Bayern Munich ousted Atalanta. Real enters after a 2-1 LaLiga loss to Mallorca; Bayern comes off a 3-2 Bundesliga win over Freiburg.

Also Tuesday: Sporting CP vs Arsenal at Estádio José Alvalade, Lisbon, at 8 pm Nigerian time. Sporting advanced by beating Bodo/Glimt, Arsenal overcame Bayer Leverkusen. Sporting won 4-2 against Santa Clara in their last domestic game, but Arsenal exited the FA Cup after a loss to Southampton.

Wednesday: Barcelona faces Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou. Barcelona defeated Atletico 2-1 in LaLiga this weekend and qualified by eliminating Newcastle United. Atletico ousted Tottenham Hotspur.

PSG vs Liverpool at Parc des Princes. PSG crushed Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate in the Round of 16, while Liverpool booked their spot with a 4-0 win over Galatasaray. PSG beat Toulouse 3-1 last week, but Liverpool lost 4-0 to Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Coach Orode Richard, speaking to DAILY POST, predicts Arsenal, Bayern Munich, PSG, and Barcelona will take first-leg advantages into the return fixtures. He notes that four Premier League clubs were eliminated in the previous round, highlighting the competition's unpredictability.

For Nigerian fans, key interest lies with Arsenal and Liverpool. Arsenal's recent FA Cup exit contrasts with Liverpool's strong UCL form. Home advantage in the first legs could be decisive, especially with experienced sides like Real Madrid and Bayern. Considering the Round of 16 upsets, will tactical adjustments or individual brilliance tip the balance? Which teams will secure a crucial lead before the second legs?
