Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine is under house arrest in Kampala, his party says, a day after elections where early results show President Yoweri Museveni with a commanding 76.25% lead compared to Wine's 19.85%. With about a quarter of votes counted, the 81-year-old Museveni seeks to extend his 40-year rule, having been accused of brutal repression and imposing an internet blackout before the vote. Election day on Thursday was marred by technical failures, including malfunctioning biometric machines and undelivered ballot papers. Wine's National Unity Platform alleged military and police surrounded his residence and jumped the fence, placing him and his wife under house arrest. The UN rights office warned of "widespread repression and intimidation" against the opposition. Results are due by 0200 GMT Saturday. While the Ugandan election may seem distant, it highlights how incumbent governments can use state power to control elections—a pattern Nigerians should watch closely, especially with the 2027 polls approaching. What lessons from Uganda's electoral process should Nigerian voters and institutions consider to protect their own democratic space?
