Uganda's youngest king Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV dies at 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, who became the world’s youngest reigning monarch at age three in 1995, died on Thursday, August 28, 2026 at about 10 pm local time. He was 34. The announcement was made by Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, Prime Minister of the Tooro Kingdom, on X, with no official cause of death disclosed. Prior to his death, Ugandan government minister Balaam Barugahara had said the king was receiving medical treatment in the United States.

Oyo’s ascension at such a tender age drew global attention to the Tooro Kingdom, located in western Uganda near the DR Congo border. Though Uganda’s restored traditional kingdoms hold no formal political authority, they remain important cultural and social institutions. Throughout his reign, Oyo was a prominent cultural figure, working to preserve and promote Tooro traditions. He was unmarried and left an heir, which Akiiki said secures the kingdom’s succession.

His death prompted an outpouring of grief across Uganda, with political leaders, public figures and citizens expressing condolences. Opposition figure and musician Bobi Wine wrote on X, “Most devastating news! May His Majesty the King’s soul rest in eternal peace.”
