Britain, France, and Canada announced sanctions on goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, September 6, 2026, joined by nine other European countries, in response to settler violence against Palestinians. The UK specifically banned imports of goods produced in these settlements, effective immediately.

The joint statement says Israel's actions undermine the two-state solution amid "unprecedented levels of settler violence and settlement expansion." Signatories include Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.

Israel retaliated by closing the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem and imposing entry bans on British MPs, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. It also terminated British involvement in training Palestinian security forces and ended UK participation in a US-led Gaza coordination mission.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog called the ban "a grave miscalculation" that puts Britain on "the wrong side of history." However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington won't follow the UK, France, and Canada in blocking settlement goods imports, creating a Western split on the approach.

This growing international pressure on Israel's settlement policies aligns with Nigeria's historical stance supporting Palestinian rights. Will these sanctions effectively pressure Israel to halt settlement expansion, or will they further entrench positions in the long-stalemated conflict?
