UK, Nigeria Sign Immigration Pact to Combat Crime, Boost Security
UK and Nigeria signed a three-year strategic plan to strengthen cooperation against organised immigration crime and border security. The agreement, signed by UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Nigeria's Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, aims to reduce visa abuse, strengthen legal systems, and improve operational collaboration. Nigeria will review its legal framework to impose stricter penalties for immigration offences, particularly false document production. Both countries will expand the UK-Nigeria Organised Immigration Crime Unit through new Memoranda of Understanding on data sharing and operational engagement. The UK will provide training and capacity building for Nigerian border security agencies. This pact supports Nigeria's economic ambitions by easing business mobility and trade, as noted by Interior Minister Tunji-Ojo. The agreement was reached during President Tinubu's state visit to the UK, which also produced a £746 million deal to modernise Nigerian seaports.
