UN Special Rapporteurs have formally contacted the Nigerian government regarding grave human rights violations in the Middle Belt region (Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, and Abuja). This marks 'a significant escalation in international scrutiny' of ongoing violence that has persisted for years.

The communication focuses on the right to life, food, housing, and security, following a 2025 Joint Urgent Appeal submitted to the UN. Investigators have requested detailed information on probe and prosecution of perpetrators, accountability for attacks by non-state actors, allegations that security forces failed to protect civilians, and the impact on vulnerable groups including women, children, and people with disabilities.

Evidence presented to the UN includes 3,276 video clips captured between January 2022 and March 2025 depicting years of violence, displacement, and loss. The UN experts have also demanded information about widespread destruction of homes, livelihoods, and civilian infrastructure across the crisis-prone zone.

As international pressure mounts, what measures should the Nigerian government take to address these serious allegations while maintaining regional stability?
