UN ramps up Venezuela earthquake aid after deadly 7.2 and 7.5 quakes
Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, struck north‑central Venezuela on 24 June, only 39 seconds apart, causing widespread devastation. The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction estimates direct physical damage at about $37 billion – roughly $24 billion for homes, businesses, schools and hospitals and another $13 billion for infrastructure, including $5 billion in telecoms losses. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that search‑and‑rescue operations continue, medical teams and engineers are arriving, and a humanitarian needs assessment is nearing completion to guide further funding. The Humanitarian Response Plan has already attracted $274 million from international donors plus over $32 million from private‑sector contributors.
