Unions stop resumption in Federal Unity Colleges over King's College plan

Unions of the Federal Ministry of Education have directed that students of all Federal Unity Colleges nationwide will not resume for the first term until further notice. The decision, announced in a communiqué issued on Thursday, protests the planned concession of King's College, Lagos, and extends to any sale, concession or privatisation of Federal Unity Colleges across the country.

This affects thousands of students, teaching and non-teaching staff, and parents who now face an unexpected disruption to the academic calendar. The unions accuse the Minister of Education of ignoring their repeated requests for a meeting over the past month, leaving them with no alternative but to halt resumption. They have appealed to parents, guardians, School-Based Management Committees, Parent-Teacher Associations and community leaders to support their opposition, and called on organisations such as ASUU, NLC, TUC and NUJ to join the campaign.
