The US economy added 178,000 jobs in March after losing 133,000 in February, with unemployment falling to 4.3%, the Labor Department reported Friday. This significantly beat economist forecasts of 59,000 new jobs. Health care led gains with 76,000 jobs, while construction grew by 26,000. Federal employment dropped 11.8% since October 2024 due to Trump's cost-cutting measures.

Analysts caution that March's growth was likely boosted by temporary factors like the end of a strike and post-winter recovery, calling it unsustainable. The data emerges amid the US-Israel war on Iran, which has surged oil prices and disrupted supply chains, raising global recession fears.

For Nigeria, a major oil importer, higher global oil prices could increase fuel costs and drive inflation, affecting household budgets, transport fares, and business operating expenses. The US labor market's fragility—characterized as 'low-hire, low-fire'—and the Federal Reserve's focus on inflation over unemployment create uncertainty for global economic stability.

With external shocks from conflict and a softening US labor market, how should Nigerian households and businesses adjust budgets, diversify supply chains, or advocate for policy shifts to mitigate imported inflation risks?
