US Blocks Visas for Iranian President’s UN Delegation Amid Straits Tension

US authorities have denied visas to several members of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s delegation, including officials from his communications team, ahead of his planned address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday. The move, described by Iranian state media as an unprecedented hostile act, comes as Pezeshkian prepares to become the highest-ranking Iranian official to visit the United States since the US‑Israeli strikes on Iran in February.

While the US has authorised the delegation’s travel for the UNGA, it plans to enforce restrictions similar to last year’s visit: members will be barred from purchasing luxury goods and certain other items while in the country. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, part of the delegation, departed Iran on Sunday evening and stopped in Qatar for a layover.

The visa denial coincides with heightened tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil and gas shipments. Iran says it has communicated conditions to the United States through Qatar, which is mediating, for reopening the waterway that Tehran has restricted since the conflict began. In response, the US has imposed a counterblockade on Iranian ports, further escalating the standoff.
