A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III delivered military equipment to the Nigerian Air Force in Lagos and Kainji this weekend under a Foreign Military Sales agreement, AFRICOM confirmed Thursday. The specific type, quantity, and value of the equipment remain undisclosed, though the shipment supports Nigeria's counterterrorism efforts against groups like ISIS in the northeast.

This delivery follows a August 13 meeting in Washington led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, where US and Nigerian officials reviewed their security partnership focusing on counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and military cooperation. It comes less than a year after the US designated Nigeria a 'Country of Particular Concern' over religious freedom in October 2025, marking a shift from tensions to deeper security engagement emphasizing Nigerian-led operations supported by US training, intelligence, and equipment.

The equipment transfer reflects expanded US-Nigeria counterterrorism collaboration this year, including a May operation where US forces, coordinating with Abuja, killed ISIS's global operations director in northeastern Nigeria. AFRICOM stresses the support is provided at Nigeria's invitation and respects national sovereignty while strengthening local counterterrorism capabilities.

With Nigeria facing persistent insecurity challenges, does this increased US military support signal a more effective approach to regional threats, or should concerns persist about over-reliance on foreign assistance for national security?
