The US Treasury announced new economic sanctions on Iran dubbed 'Operation Economic Outcast,' aiming to sever Iran's economic ties globally. Secretary Scott Bessent said the US will pressure countries trading with Iran to stop, citing nearly 60 corporations, individuals and vessels sanctioned—including Chinese nationals—for enabling Iran's 'recklessness.' Sanctions target shipping, oil, crypto, gold and aviation sectors.

This follows seven months of US-Iran conflict and the expiration of a US-Iran agreement signed June 17, which lapsed August 15 after its 60-day deadline. Trump previously demanded Iran's surrender and threatened to claim the Strait of Hormuz as US territory. Iran's Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh rejected the sanctions, stating Tehran is prepared for economic war. China, Iran's top trading partner, called unilateral US sanctions illegal for its citizens to comply.

For Nigeria as an oil exporter, these sanctions could influence global crude prices and market stability. Monitor oil market reactions and assess how China's resistance to US pressure might affect Sino-Nigerian trade partnerships and oil transaction mechanisms.
