US Lawmakers Move to Block Trump’s Russian Oil Deal with New Bill

US lawmakers, led by Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R‑PA) and Rep. Don Bacon (R‑NE), announced they will introduce a bipartisan bill, the “Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Act,” to block any purchases of Russian oil, opposing President Trump’s move to lift sanctions on Russian crude. The legislators say the deal would fund Putin’s war in Ukraine and benefit adversaries like China, warning it could lead to more violence and undermine American security.

For Nigeria, as a major oil exporter, any shift in US‑Russian oil trade influences global crude prices and thus national revenue. Democrats such as Sen. Chuck Schumer (D‑NY) called the arrangement a “deal with the devil” that aids Iran in targeting U.S. troops, while Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D‑CT) urged Trump to rescind the agreement immediately, and Rep. Don Beyer (D‑VA) warned that expanding tariff powers in hopes of helping Ukraine was a mistake.

The bill will be forced to the House floor via a discharge petition and is expected to pass overwhelmingly. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said up to 1 million tons of diesel could be exported by December, with potential growth to 3 million tons per month. Will this legislative move curb Russian oil exports, and how might that affect fuel prices and government revenues in Nigeria?
