US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked residency status of family members of former Iranian Vice President Masoumeh Ebtekar, stating they 'should never have been allowed to benefit from the extraordinary privilege of living in our country.' The family members—Seyed Eissa Hashemi (Ebtekar's son), his wife Maryam Tahmasebi, and their son—are now in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody pending deportation. Rubio terminated their lawful permanent resident status this week. Ebtekar, also known as 'Screaming Mary,' was spokeswoman for Islamic terrorists who held 52 Americans hostage at the US Embassy in Tehran for 444 days in 1979. Her family initially received visas in 2014 under the Obama Administration, then gained permanent residency in 2016 through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. Rubio emphasized this action reflects the Trump Administration's policy that 'the US will never become home for anti-American terrorists or their families.' How might this reshape US immigration policies for individuals with connections to historical political conflicts?
