US slaps new sanctions on Cuba's President, military entities
US imposes fresh sanctions on Cuba's President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and four other individuals, along with five Cuban entities including military holding company GAESA and Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR). Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the designations, claiming these entities "sustain the regime's malicious campaign to subvert and destabilize U.S. national security." Cuba's President vowed to resist, calling the measures "political blindness" aimed at "reinforcing the blockade and conflict" between nations. Washington warns businesses against dealing with entities owned 50% or more by the sanctioned organizations, warning of potential penalties. The sanctions also target a Cuban government gold mining joint venture accused of enriching the military and elites "at the expense of its people." For Nigerian audiences, while this is primarily a Cuba-US issue, it demonstrates the Trump administration's continued hardline approach to nations perceived as adversarial. The designation of military and economic entities could signal similar approaches toward other countries with complex US relationships.
