US slaps sanctions on Iranian airlines, cargo firms amid Middle East tensions
The United States Treasury has sanctioned 27 Iranian airlines and 36 companies in the UAE, Turkey, Malaysia and Kazakhstan for allegedly supporting Iran’s aviation sector, which Washington says transports weapons, personnel and illegal cargo. The move is part of Operation Economic Outcast, targeting firms that help with Mahan Air’s flights, aircraft procurement and cargo services.
For Nigerians, the sanctions could affect global oil supplies. Iran’s earlier blockade of the Strait of Hormuz already pushed up crude prices, and further restrictions on its export channels may keep fuel costs high at home. Nigerian businesses that deal with any of the flagged airlines or cargo agents risk losing access to the international financial system under US secondary sanctions.
Stay informed about petrol price adjustments from NNPC or trusted stations, and consider fuel‑saving options like carpooling or switching to more efficient vehicles. If you work with Middle‑East aviation or logistics partners, screen them against the US sanctions list to avoid unintended financial restrictions.
