The United States will impose new tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on imports from dozens of its major trading partners, including China and India, starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday. The duties replace the temporary 10% global tariff introduced in February after courts struck down broader tariff measures. Oil and gas imports are exempt, as are goods that cannot be sourced domestically. Countries that have taken steps to address forced-labour concerns may qualify for the lower 10% rate; others face the higher 12.5% rate. The U.S. says the tariffs could remain in place indefinitely and is also launching Section 301 investigations into alleged overcapacity in China, Mexico and the European Union, plus planning a 50% tariff on selected Canadian goods next month under the Smoot-Hawley Act.

For Nigerians, the direct impact is limited because Nigerian crude oil and gas exports to the U.S. are exempt. However, other Nigerian exportssuch as agricultural products, textiles and manufactured goodscould face the new duties if they fall under the covered categories. Importers of U.S. goods may see higher costs, which could translate into higher prices for electronics, clothing and other consumer items. Global supply chains could also feel ripple effects, affecting shipping costs and demand for Nigerian commodities.

What should you know or do? If you import from the U.S. or export to the U.S., review your supply chains and pricing to assess potential cost changes. Consider diversifying markets or renegotiating contracts. Consumers might want to budget for possible price rises on imported goods.
