More than 100 political prisoners were freed in Venezuela on Sunday, according to the non-governmental organization Foro Penal, which verified 104 releases nationwide. The organization had initially reported 80 releases, with attorney Gonzalo Himiob noting the figure could increase as verifications continue. These releases come under pressure from the United States and follow the capture of leftist president Nicolas Maduro by US special forces earlier this month. Venezuela's interim leader, Delcy Rodriguez, promised to release a 'large number' of Maduro's opponents still imprisoned. In an address to oil workers in Anzoategui state on Sunday, Rodriguez criticized foreign interference, saying: 'Enough orders from Washington on politicians in Venezuela. Let Venezuelan politics resolve our differences and internal conflicts.' Authorities in Caracas claim they have freed 626 detainees since December, though Foro Penal has only documented about half that number. Human rights groups and Venezuela's political opposition have criticized the slow pace of releases, with families of detainees camped outside prisons waiting for their loved ones. The situation remains ongoing as the interim government navigates political transition and external pressure.
