WHO confirms more than 900 suspected Ebola cases identified in Democratic Republic of Congo since outbreak declared May 15, including 101 confirmed cases. The Bundibugyo strain responsible has no approved vaccine or available treatments, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

DRC health ministry reported 204 deaths from 867 suspected cases across three provinces in a Saturday update. Medical teams shown working with full personal protective equipment in affected areas, with protocols for disinfection after handling deceased patients.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids and can cause severe bleeding and organ failure. The conflict-hit nature of DRC complicates containment efforts as surveillance continues. With more than 15,000 Ebola deaths across Africa in the past half-century, neighboring countries are implementing enhanced border screenings.

What preparedness measures should West African countries implement to prevent cross-border transmission given the proximity and historical Ebola patterns in the region?
