WHO sees encouraging signs in DRC Ebola fight as outbreak persists

WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo is showing "encouraging" signs that responders are gaining ground, even as the outbreak continues to spread. Speaking at a news conference in Geneva, Tedros noted early progress in containment efforts but warned the virus is still active in the country.

The outbreak, which has now surpassed 7,000 cases according to earlier reports, remains most intense in a key province of the DRC. WHO estimates that an additional 5,000 health workers are required to strengthen surveillance, treatment and community engagement. These figures come from Channels Television’s coverage of the ongoing crisis, which also highlights the need for sustained international support.

While the encouraging trend suggests interventions are having an effect, the persisting transmission means the situation is far from resolved. Continued funding, medical supplies and personnel are critical to prevent further spread across borders and to protect vulnerable populations.

Given the scale of the outbreak and the staffing gap, what concrete steps can NGOs, donors or ordinary citizens take to support the response—whether through donations, advocacy, or volunteering—so that the encouraging signs translate into a decisive end to the epidemic?
