WHO warns DRC Ebola outbreak largest ever, urges regional vigilance
WHO says the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the largest ever recorded, with more than 1,400 confirmed cases and over 400 deaths. WHO Regional Director for Africa Mohamed Janabi disclosed this on Friday, noting the outbreak has surpassed all previous Bundibugyo Ebola outbreaks combined and warning of continued cross-border transmission after an imported case appeared in Uganda.
As of 2 July, Uganda reported 20 confirmed cases—15 imported and five Ugandan nationals identified during quarantine—with no community transmission recorded there. Response efforts show progress: contact tracing in DRC rose from 25% to 83%, surveillance improved, and over 200 patients have recovered. A WHO‑supported clinical trial testing treatments specific to the Bundibugyo strain has enrolled its first patients.
